To Love and To Die – Princess Diana II

James 1:17a (NIV)

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights….

No public event on the date that marked the 20th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana, but the anniversary was not muted. Weeks before apart from newspaper headlines and TV tributes, a brand new documentary ‘Diana, In Her Own Words’ (1) was on the Tube. It said that it was at her most candid, and original interview which revealed the profound insights into one of the most iconic women of our time.

All of us, being as women, including those who had never cared for her; or had a mixed feeling of admiration and resentment toward her or disliked her, even, could be able to reflect on ramifications of our own emotional life, via the lens of Diana’s life, one way or another. That’s why we found many of her devotees were young women in their early twenties. It means that some of them were not born 20 years ago.

The documentary was like ‘keeping up with Diana (1981-1997),’ but not at all like what with the ‘Kardashians.’ As it may bring out old controversies, and it bared Diana’s hurts beyond belief and her pain. Furthermore, Prince William and Prince Harry decided were the appropriate time, 20-years on for them to openly articulate their griefs of loss. I was trying to catch keywords from her ‘Tell All” and see if I could get a Christian perspective on her life and death.

With father absence and mother always distraught marked Diana’s unhappy childhood. According to the Windsor, a virgin with no romantic history was considered a most ideal match for the Prince, the future king. The Royal wedding 1981 with over 750 thousand viewers around the world. It was none of any version of the Cinderella as we had known of before because it was done with God’s favor on the Royal couple.

It is written, in the Book of Genesis 2:28 (NIV), that the Lord, God said,” It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Also, it says (Proverbs 18:22-NIV) that “He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.”

Why ‘In Her Own Words,’ Diana calls the wedding to Charles the “worst day of my life?” And the whole world knew that Prince Charles had a married lover, Camilla, all along. Diana had her first nightmare as Prince Charles brought along a stack of books to read on their honeymoon. Didn’t he realize that he just married the most admired woman in the world?

No wonder she kept using words of ‘sacrificial lamb‘ to describe herself in the Royal marriage. I believe that Prince Charles would want to love her, would grow to love her but the big gap in ages and the lack of compatibility between them, he probably let her feeling rejected and discarded, without knowing it. So she was miserable and unhappy.

“Under three things the earth trembles….., under four it cannot bear up….’an unloved woman who is married” (Proverbs 30:21, 23- NIV).

Was Diana hysterical wanting attention? But the whole world was madly in love with her; paparazzi never let loose on chasing after her every move. It was a loveless marriage the cause of her unhappiness. As a result, she openly talked about her Bulimia; her seeking help from doctors; her suicidal attempts, cutting herself up with knives. Finally, she rejoiced with a thankful heart when she gave birth of her two sons.

And it was admirable and courageous that Diana was resolute to impact her kids out of her awareness of life beyond the Palace wall. It was said by the young Prince: “She was one of the naughtiest parents.” “And of course, as a son, I would say this, she was the best mum in the world. She mothered us with love, that’s for sure.” Diana adored her sons and loved them deeply and dearly.

Why she still suffered from her emotional disorder? Why at the end the divorce was inevitable?  Naturally, emotionally the big void in her heart was always in her intense longing for the love of her husband, but in vain. Can we say that the supernatural reality was that what God’s curse (due to Adam’s sin against God in the GardenGenesis 3) upon all women in the world, which we live in today? And Diana was without exception.

“.…..Yet your desire (passionate or intense longing) will be for your husband, And he will rule over you.”- Genesis 3:16b (NASV).

Immediately I was reminded of an unloved woman, “Leah” who was married that occurred in the book of Genesis.  In life, Diana had mirrored Leah’s life to some extent. But unlike Leah, Diana had no problem with her eyesight. The story of Leah would be just a ‘click’ away on Google search. It is naive for any woman to believe that giving birth a child would resuscitate a loveless marriage, but the worst is still, plus a child.

God is LOVE, HE loves the world so much and sent his only son, Jesus ‘to have a human nature as sinners have and to pay for sin. That way God condemned sin in our corrupt nature (Romans 8:3- God’s Word Translation).’ So all men and women would be able to have a curse-free life. And for women, we need the power of God’s perfect love to strip off our weakness in our emotions so we will not look for love in all the wrong places.

‘Diana devotees’ were in their infatuations on what they saw of her in public. After her ‘tell-all,’ people, especially women could easily relate to her brokenness and to feel for her severe emotional disorder that plagued her life. Women were hurt for her when finding out that she had everything on earth but not true love and happiness. That’s probably why when her love life after being single-again was tainted with a fair share of gossips and scandals, and yet she was still people’s Princess in their hearts.

To Love and To Die -Princess Diana

06/09/2017

Ephesians 3:18 – NIV

‘….may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.’

20-years ago, the death of Princess Diana, dated 31-08-1997, in a fatal car crash, in Paris was profound, shocking news that ‘rocked Britain and the monarchy,’ (1),  and the whole world was also stunned by it. In a week, people from all over to pay their tributes to their beloved Princess, It was an awesome sight that was next to none in the whole history of England that flowers, note cards, and candles were piling up outside of both Diana’s Kensington and Queen’s Buckingham Palaces.

BBC Television had continuous rolling coverage on Princess Diana’s death, and the announcement of her death almost monopolised the prime times’ news headlines worldwide for days. Mr Tony Blair, the Prime Minister, then, in his words to his press spokesman, Alastair Campbell said:”this is going to produce grief like none of us has ever seen.”  (1)

20-years ago, today, an estimated 2.5 billion people around the world tuned into TV live broadcasts for her funeral (2). Diana’s funeral to me was a God-glorifying event, yet I had many would consider having the two Princes to walk behind their mother’s coffin in public procession as a circus of grief.  However, people all agreed that the most touching tribute was a special envelope with a word “MUMMY” sat atop Diana’s coffin.

Was the funeral a circus of grief? In a most recent interview with Newsweek, Prince Harry candidly voiced his disapproval to be asked to walk behind her mother’s coffin and watched by thousands (3). Although it was not a state funeral it was one of the most viewed events in history. It was believed that more than one million people lined the streets of London, and flowers rained down onto the coffin from bystanders. And it didn’t make Diana’s funeral a royal circus of grief for the world to witness.

20-years ago, today, a Royal ceremonial funeral service was held inside of the Westminster Abby (4), the Hymn of love, ‘The King of Love My Shepherd Is’ – from Psalm 23 was solemnly sung; Mr Tony Blair read the Hymn to love from St Paul’s letter 1 Corinthian 13. Also, I was deeply moved by what Diana’s sister, Lady Sara McCorquodale read that “time is slow for those who wait…..for those who love time is the eternity and isn’t it true that God is Love?

Little did I know that it took decades for Mr Billy Graham, the most renown evangelist of the 21-century to have his estimated 2.2 billion lifetime audience including radio and television broadcasts, worldwide (5)? And for one and half hour, Princess Diana’s funeral was instrumental in impacting an estimated of 2.5 billion people to be able to hear and watch the message of love, maybe for the first time in their lives.

20-years later, ‘Diana devotees’ still crowd around the gates of Kensington Palace with flowers, cards to pay their tributes to their idol. Many resonated that it was an emotional  ‘fascination’  that people attached to the ‘fairytale wedding and the modern monarchy so that Diana’ s impact is still real today 20-years on. In fact, it was all about God’s favours that she was given the looks, attainment, and was married a Prince, and how many real Royal Princes we can still find today?

God is the God of perfection in His time, and HE is gracious. HE allowed the funeral to be the most watched event on earth, but what if the funeral gained more than its share of public attention? And it says in the book of Isaiah 42:8 “I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not yield my glory to anyone else. ”  So the world received another shocking news that Mother Teresa died with cardiac problems (26 August 1910-05 Sept-1997) (7) that is one day before the day of Diana’s funeral which certainly would keep many people in perspective.

p.s

I was led to share my thoughts on Princess Diana.  I didn’t know why I didn’t have the flow with me to write for days. Finally, I realised that I was not asked to write about Diana, but to share how people can see my LORD of God, Jesus in Diana and how HE used her life/death to minister to you and myself as women.

Emperor Kangxi’ Magnificent Seven

Emperor KangxiThe Death of Christ

功成(十)字血成溪      “When the work of the cross is done, blood flowed like a river,”
(千)丈恩流分自西      “Grace from the west flowed a thousand yards deep,”
身列(四)衙半夜路      “On the midnight road he was subjected to four(4) trials,”
徒方(三)背兩番鸡      “Before the rooster crowed twice, three(2) times betrayed by a disciple.”
(五)(百)鞭达寸肌裂   “Five (5) hundred lashes tore every inch of skin,”
(六)尺悬垂(二)盜齐   “Two (2)thieves hung on either side, six (6) feet high,”
慘恸(八)垓惊(九)品   “Sadness greater than any had ever known,”
(七)言(一)毕万灵啼   “Seven (7) words, one (1) completed task, ten thousand spirits weep.”
Further to my previous postings on Emperor Kangxi’ (1) poem, I am finally at the last 7-word-sentence of the poem. And we had the Chinese numeral 7 to begin the sentence. The Chinese Classic, poetry would almost have no punctuation. Therefore,  if we dissected this sentence with punctuations then the translation would naturally read as –
七(7)言一(1)毕万灵啼     –  (Qī) yán (yī) bì wàn líng tí –
“Seven words, one completed task, ten thousand spirits weep.”
We have had five key words in the last 7-word-sentence,. According to the Kangxi dictionary, the root meaning of 言 yán can be either used as noun or verb. It refers as ‘words;’ ‘letters,’ ‘speeches/to speak,’ announcements/to announce’ ‘declarations/to declare, or description/to describe…’ (2)

The Chinese numeral of 一(1- ) that is one, once. And the word of (bì) that is to complete, finish or to be done with.(3)  And as for万灵啼 ‘wàn líng tí, although the Chinese numeral of (wàn), which means Ten Thousand, however, that’s an expression of a  quantifying adjective here.

Finally, the word of ( 灵-líng) that is the Spirit, or the Soul and the word of (啼-tí), which means to weep, crying out loud or wailing. On Google search, there are commentaries with the title of “Seven Words Of Jesus On the Cross”(4) that could be a perfect add-on to Kangxi7-word-per-sentence poem with supporting scriptures that occur in the four gospels.

However, the Emperor didn’t incorporate them, otherwise, his poem ‘The Death of Christ’ would need more than 56 words. Evidently, the 7-word-per-sentence was the Emperor’s choice for the style of his poem. And the last 7-word-sentence would be the Emperor’s closing to conclude his emotional knowledge on the death of the Christ and the spiritual significance of Jesus’ finishing work on the Cross.

The first 7-word sentence was Emperor’s opening to spell out the symbolism of the finishing work on the Cross. We have a passage of scripture from 1 John 5:6, in the Bible to validate that the meaning of the Cross is Death. It is the death of both of the Son of men(the water) and the Son of God (the blood) and it is not about the simple blood shedding around like water.

To follow, there are five 7-word-sentence with 49 words (including Chinese numeralsin total, to narrate the actual occurrences. The open court trials, the sense of betrayal by his disciple and descriptions of the torturous beating were photographic. In closing, it would be more logical for me to conclude that it was because of the death of our dear Lord of God, Jesus that led tens thousands to weep and lament.

Now we ask that is Emperor Kangxi a Christian? He was not a Christian as no record of him being baptized as one. In nature, with or without himself knowing it, his  7-word-per-sentence poem ( qi-yen-shewould have made a strong emotional appeal to people in the whole of China, as to be reverent to the deceased has long been the deeply rooted value system for the Chinese for thousands of years.

Supernaturally, the poem was the seed that was planted into the Chinese minds and into preparing them to be receptive to the good news that probably would lead them to adopt a new believing system for years yet to come then.  As we examined of how the Emperor came to power from being a Manchurian to rule the majority of the ethnic Han Chinese.

Further to how he was able to accomplish so much and so great during his reign of 60-years; to order the compilation of the Chinese dictionary that was named after him, and his openness to befriend with the Catholic Jesuit priests from Europe and didn’t become a Catholic at the end(5). It is all about HIM, our dear Lord of God, Jesus.

As it is said that ‘ for without me you can do nothing John 15:b KJV. Finally, I would like to believe the poem ‘ The Death of Christ,‘ is a revelation of Emperor Kangxi’ open ‘profession and processing’ of his Christian faith. And it proves that our dear Lord Jesus is above all things and HE raised a Christian ruler in China, back in 1600.

The Champion of Homiletic – The Chinese Emperor of Kangxi

In tune with my previous posting, dated 05/08/17, and yesterday, I miraculously, located the cover of the calendar of 2005, not 2008 that was with the Emperor’s poems on it, I had been looking all over for it, for years, in vain, and it had been on the small shelf on top of my writing desk for the past 12-year. It is all because of HIM that I was able to find it.

功成十字血成溪 (Pinyin – Gōng chéng shízì xiě chéng xī)

When the work of the cross is done, blood flowed like a river,

The second part of the first sentence is about the shedding of the blood. And the Emperor correctly and amazingly stated what says in tune with the scripture (1) that Jesus was already dead, then one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear and  Jesus’ blood and water immediately flowed out.…

The poetry of any poem without punctuation would open up rooms for many different interpretations. As for 血成溪 (Xiě chéng xī), – 血 (Xiě )is blood; 溪(xī) means Brooks that is a form of water; and the Chinese etymology of 成 (chéng) according to the Kangxi dictionary means the ending, at the end (2).

Evidently, the translation is true to its original Chinese text, but for the spiritual reading of 血成溪 (Xiě chéng xī), you may have to agree with me that the scripture 1 John 5:6 (3-NLT) would be more in tune with the whole sentence than John 19:34. It is because that  Jesus Christ was baptized in water as the son of man; by shedding the blood on the Cross as the Son of God. So His finished work is done by water and blood, and the Spirit confirms it with the testimony.

So His finished work is done with both of the water and His blood, and the Spirit is the truth to testify that. I sincerely hope that by the grace of the social media would have more people to give their comments on it.

五(5) 百(100 – Hundred) 鞭挞寸肤裂 (- pinyin – Biāntà cùn fū liè)

Five hundred lashes tore every inch of His skin

It has always been for over an hour; without having outlines, only power pointing scriptures and without giving out the sermon topic till the middle of the coming week, that’s how Pastor Prince gave his sermon. Last Sunday, (06/08/17)(4), we were on ‘by His stripe(s) we are healed, from Isaiah 53:5b, (5)1 Peter 2:24-25 (6) and beyond

It was Pastor’s continuation on the theme of how of God’s healing virtue would have impacted us as Christians. He prayed for God’s healing for the sick during the worship service.  And I was stunned when he called out the in-house-produced big screen visual aid with the sound effect to show how the soldier would deliver blows to Jesus.

I first heard Pastor Prince’ in-depth word study on ‘stripe(s)’ in October 2016. He explained that how the “Hebrew noun translated “stripes” uses a grammatical singular” to fall in with the cruelty of how Jesus was inflicted on the road to the Cross. Last Sunday, Pastor used the Greek translation of the English word oflaceration.

Physically, the succeeding blows would ripple all the small blood vessels, and all whiplashed were soaked into the skeletal muscles with no skin adhesion left, therefore, what covered Jesus‘ upper back would appear like a Single Strip. Then we would want to ask, as to how many lashes Jesus received?

Pastor Prince further contended that according to Moses’ Law, scourging couldn’t exceed forty (40), but it was under the Roman Law, so Jesus was scourged with more than forty. Although the Emperor brilliantly used 7-word poetic sentence to animate the beatings, however, 500 lashes would be unreal, a hundred is more acceptable, right?

Then I pondered why the Emperor put the 五(5) before the hundreds (百) lashes? Is it that he understood the symbolism of Hebrew numerology? As the number 5 symbolizes God’s grace. Can we conclude that in NatureJesus even had to endure a hundred brutal beatings, God’s  grace was sufficient for Jesus to glorify Himself and the Father Supernaturally.

Obviously, we saw the numeral 7 occurs in the last sentence of the poem. Frequently the number 7 is found in contexts that talk about the completeness, but it’s also about the 7 pieces of evidence of Jesus’ Messiahship; 7 miracles (signs) in the Gospel of John and more than 50 times in the book of Revelation.

There is more symbolism of 7 occurs in the Old Testament. Of course, we can light-heartedly say that 7 is just a number, but we can’t overlook the spiritual significance that’s evident from cover to cover in the entire Bible. So I would have to write another chapter to see how the Emperor puts his magnificent number 7 into his poem contextually.

Please stay tuned

Emperor KangXi – ‘The Death of Christ

It probably was in 2008, I received a calendar from the local office of Campus Crusade For Christ (1 )as a give away to people to for the New Year. I immediately felt seriously humbled and challenged as I saw Emperor KangXi – The Death of Christ as the cover of the calendar with the English translations as below:

康熙皇帝 - 基督之死 (Jīdū zhī sǐ) (2)

Emperor Kangxi – The Death of Christ

功成十字血成溪 When the work of the cross is done, blood flowed like a river,
千丈恩流分自西 Grace from the west flowed a thousand yards deep,
身列四衙半夜路 On the midnight road he was subjected to four trials,
徒方三背兩番鸡 Before the rooster crowed twice, three times betrayed by a disciple.
五百鞭达寸肌裂 Five hundred lashes tore every inch of skin,
六尺悬垂二盜齐 Two thieves hung on either side, six feet high,
慘恸八垓惊九品 Sadness greater than any had ever known,
七言一毕万灵啼 Seven words, one completed task, ten thousand spirits weep.

The structure of the poem was in the total conformity with the ancient Chinese classical of 诗 (qi-yen-she) format, which means that every complete sentence consisted exactly seven words with rhymes. So the poem only has had 8 complete sentences with 56 Chinese characters, in total and with no punctuation.

With an unbroken history for 5000-year, the Chinese people have been exposed to many folk religions even longer before philosophies such as Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism that didn’t come into China till 5th/6th centuries. So it would need more than a miracle for the Emperor to tell the story of the Cross to the Chinese during his reign.

I was gravitated by the Chinese numerals that amazingly occur in the poem, which has symbols for the decimal power from 1 (, Yi); 10 (十, Shi); 100 ( –Bai); 1000 (Qiān) and 10,000 ( Wàn).  And 13 out of the total of 56 words are Chinese numerals. And each numeral has its deep scriptural significance.

People may puzzle why the Emperor would choose to use a numerical approach to convey his faith? Presumptuously I would think that he, being a Manchurian was probably led to show his cultural sense and sensitiveness as of the Han ethnic people, many in general, are superstitiously obsessed with numbers and even till today.

1 =     Once for all, the finished work, or you can say ‘the one task’

2 =      Two thieves

3 =      Three times denials

4 =      Four trials back and forth

5 =      Five hundred stripes

6 =     Six feet high tree for crucifixion

7 =     Seven final words to

8 =     Eight points of a compass – to the furthermost point of the world

9 =     Nine ranks of officials – all walks of people

10=    Chinese Numeral 10, also the pictographs of the Cross

The poem is descriptive and pictographic as if the Emperor were at the scene as the spectator to witness from the trials, the beatings, Peter’s denials and as if he was at the foot of the Cross next to Jesus’ earthly mother, Mary when the physical crucifixion actually took place.

Let us intently look at how the Emperor magnificently weaved the Chinese numerals and his choices of words into this awesome seven-word poem. Evidently, the Emperor had interfaced his perfect grip of the spiritual significance that’s our dear Lord Jesus’ finished work on the Cross.

I would never be in any position or attempt to compare and definitely not trying to contrast with the existing translation, but to share my reflection on the original text with my Chinese resources and prayerfully in tune with passages of scriptures in the Bible.

功成十字 ‘When the work of the Cross is done’

The first 2-word phrases are “ (pinyinGōng chéng),which literally, means ‘the work is done,’ or, ‘it is finished.’ And 十 (Shi)is the Chinese numeral Ten (10) but according to the “Historical forms of the character ” (3)as below, don’t you think that it pictographs the Cross to us, especially the large seal script? but definitely how I see it.

Oracle bone script Bronze inscriptions Bamboo and silk script Large seal script Small seal script
十-oracle.svg 十-bronze.svg 十-silk.svg 十-bigseal.svg 十-seal.svg

The character of (Zi) means ‘word’ or character in Chinese. And the commonly used translation of the Cross  in the Chinese version of the Bible would be十字架 (Shízìjià). And (jià) means frame,’ ‘rack,’stand,’ or ‘shelf.  however, I think that with the restraint of 7-word poem in consideration, the Emperor omitted the word of 架, but it wouldn’t compromise what he intended to express.

And it shall be easy for Christian to relate the four (4) words of – “ 十字(- Gōng Chéng Shi Zi)“to the following passage of Scriptures, which Apostle John has entailed the ‘finished work‘ with four (4) passage of scriptures that occurs both in the book of ‘Revelation,’ and the Gospel of John.

John 17:4 “ I have finished the workwhich You have given Me to do.”

John 19:30 – “It is finished.” And it says “that is the final word in the redemption of humankind,’’ Oswald Chamber.

Revelation 16:17  “when God proclaimed the end of His catastrophic wrath.. and

Revelation 21:6a  “HE said unto me, it is done –“

To be continued

Is Chinese Emperor KangXi a Christian?

I had a lunch fellowship with my BFF We Tsoo, a few months ago. Apart from catching up with each other, she asked if I knew of whether Emperor KangXi (1645-1722) (1) was a Christian? Immediately, two of emperor’s poems with English translations, which I came across a few years ago, came back to my mind.

After the lunch, I reflected on what’s the significance for people to know whether or not the Emperor was a Christian?  It probably would bring a sense of purpose to Christians who were called to serve our dear Lord of God, in China if they knew about KangXi’ policy to open doors for foreign mission works done in China.

Time flies, a few months later, today, Arthur and I had lunch with my cousin Michael and his wife, Taky. And I couldn’t believe that in the course of having our fellowship, we were talking about Emperor KangXi and his magnificent poems.By the grace of social media, Michael managed to show Kangxi’ ‘The Death of Christ,” on his smart phone for us,

In the restaurant, Michael and I joyously recite the poem together. We were a bit loud but surely, we had Christ centered conversation at lunch with the family member. And Taky suddenly asked if KangXi was a Christian? What an awesome way to direct me that’s what I am going to put up for posting today.

Although evidently no record of the Emperor being baptized as Christian, but in Chinese history, he had befriended with Ferdinand Verbiest,(2) a Catholic missionary from Belgium, Europe. Many Jesuit priests managed to win his trust and lived in with him in the Forbidden City.

And in 1692, he personally issued a decree to legalize Catholic churches and the practice of Christianity nation wide. Regrettably, the friendly relationship had its ramifications. Speculations were saying that the live-in priests disapproved the emperor to have more than one wife.

As a matter of fact, it was that his priest friends sent by the Vatican fervently condemned Chinese ‘Ancestor worship and ‘Confucian Ceremonies. In a rage, therefore, the Emperor thus decided to closed hundreds of churches and banned missions, so the Emperor was never a Catholic.

My former Pastor, David Packer, once contended that “you don’t need to tell people that you are a Christian, but let them be surprised when they found out that you are one.” So, it is immaterial that no record revealed that the Emperor was Christian. And it wouldn’t surprise us if we saw him when we get to heaven because of the Christ centered poems he wrote.

Has it ever occurred to you, that the Manchurian, descended from North Nomadic ( ) tribe, hunters and horsemen of China came to rule the majority of sophisticated civilized, ethnic Han-Chinese people during the Feudal times for almost two hundred years if it were not by God’s will? (3)

It was a miracle for a non-Han emperor not only to have an exceptional good command of the language that’s differed from his own, but was also given a vision, in 1710 to order the compilation a new version of Chinese dictionary, the KangXi Dictionary ( Kāngxī Zìdiǎn) (4) that had evolved from an early 2nd Century, ClassicalChinese Dictionary (说 文 解字 – Shuōwén Jiězì),’(5) on Han Dynasty.

It took more than 5-year to complete the compilation. Therefore, the  KangXi Dictionary was named after the emperor’s era name. And it was the standard Chinese dictionary during the 18th and 19th centuries. And it has always been a useful tool for people who are learning the Chinese language ever since.

It is hard to fathom that the Emperor had never left the country, and the printed bible was probably not readily available during his entire reign, especially after he parted with his Jesuit priest friends, but he could compose few spirit led poems. The one with the title of ‘The Death Of Christ,” with only 8 completed sentences and 56 Chinese characters to depict the suffering Christ and the essence of HIS finished work on the Cross.

God has always worked in mysterious ways. Last year, in 2016, I couldn’t find a single slot to rejoin the local BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) (6) for the book study on Revelation. At the end, thankfully I got into the one and only Chinese class, in Singapore, and it’s the first time, in my life, to study the Bible with my Chinese resources.

I have continued on the Gospel of John in the Chinese class since the beginning of 2017. I didn’t expect the Chinese version of the Bible would come as a perfect aid for me to ponder Emperor Kangxi’ poem, ‘The Death Of Christ,’ all over again. The English version of the poem is available via Google search(7).

In general, I rejoiced that the profoundness of the poem was not lost in translation. But have a bit of reservation to say Amen to few sentences of the translation when I refer to the actual scriptures.  And prayerfully, I hope to be able to footnote the original text with the passage of scriptures from the Bible, on ‘The Death of Christ.’

To be continued!

Addicted To Love – Amy Winehouse

two-hearts-intertwined-447014.jpg

2 Peter 1:3

“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of Him who called us by his glory and goodness.”

My friends would wonder why I bother to spend time on the late British singing artist, Amy Winehouse. (1) I knew not of her, nor her music, before her tragic death at the age of 27 (1983-2011). Let this be my tribute to her with the love of Jesus.

Amy’s brief life was alien to me before her passing. It was sad to see the tabloids unrelentingly spotlighted more, on her makeup, her tattoo, and her ” rowdy behavior,” till the “Amy Winehouse Biography” by Cyril Cordor,(2 )came out. And I like what says:“…fans and critics alike embraced her rugged charm, brash sense of humor, and distinctively soulful and jazzy vocals, Her....”

With personal endorsements and Archival shots, the Oscar-award-winning documentary Amy (2015)’ (3)by Asif Kapadia, is perfect, to chronicle the “meteoric rise and terrible fall of the Grammy-winning British, Singer-Songwriter, Amy Winehouse.’I personally, like the onscreen lyrics, which are in line with most of Amy’s performance, in the film.

Apart from her unique voice, I got to know more about her and her striking talent, in writing her lyrics, at such a young age. I have never developed an appreciation for Soul or Jazz music, but I have to echo what the critics were saying that Amy was an old Soul songwriter, but trapped in a young body. Personally, her lyrics are very PG-13.

If what says that ‘every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights…(James 1:17 NIV) then it was God who gives Amy the ability to write her first song at 14 and followed by her great success in the area of her music and her wealth.

She said that her songs were her stories, then albums from “Love Is A Losing Game,” “You Know I’m No Good,” and “Tears Dry On Their Own,” were all interfacing the outcry of her emotional hunger and dryness. Her songs of ‘Rehab,’ and ‘Addicted’ revealed her addictiveness.

Christian John Wikane John, an NYC-based journalist, and music essayist also the Contributing Editor for The PopMatters,’ had a comprehensive write-up with the title Amy Winehouse – “Back to Black,”‘ (4) to expound on Amy’s music and more, and the full article is just a click away.

With her on/off relationship with her ex-husband, she wrote ‘We only said goodbye with words, I died a hundred times – you go back to her – And I go back to ….’ as lyrics for her hit song, ‘Back to Black., ” I died a hundred times…” she subconsciously was either playing with mortality or knew that she was going to die before her time.

It was grief-stricken to see the footage of when she was booed off the stage, as she was tipsy and too drunk to perform at her last concert. According to the autopsy, alcohol poisoning was the cause of her death, but we may have to ask was that what plagued her life?

Amy had mirrored a young woman who was deeply addicted to love with love, for the wrong guy. And in the meantime, when she was exposed to drugs or alcohol, then her life was a downward spiral with no way of turning back. Some people would deem that Amy shouldn’t say ‘NO’ to Rehab. People near her, and probably even herself would reckon that’s the end of it.

Therefore, it is highly possible that Amy was fully aware of her powerless state and what she wanted was not as simple as to rid of the substance, but a Spiritual Rehab. Amy needed help. Had anyone near her pointed her to Jesus? And Jesus would wipe out her tears;

Had anyone ever told her or ensured her that the Daddy God would never leave her nor forsake her, but love her for eternity? And had anyone told her that her love affair with Jesus is going to be a beautiful thing, not a losing game?

Veteran singer Tony Bennett, in an interview with theGuardian, (5) said: Of all the contemporary artists I know, she has the most natural jazz voice, but I’m worried about her and I’m praying for her.” “She ‘d help everybody by sobering up and cleanings up her spirituality.”

It was tragic that Amy died at such young age. And 7 years ago, her hit album ‘Back to Black’ had over 200 million views on the VEVO channel, on YouTube. And few of her albums have been charted ever since her passing, and some of them have been re-charted again recently.

Amy was killing herself softly with songs she wrote. And I wonder how would her songs have any impact on those who are listening to her songs? How many out of that 200 million viewers need to hear about Jesus? Finally, no Amy would come out for curtain calls. As God put a complete stop on her deep addictive lo…longings for love in all the wrong places, probably with all the wrong guys.

Deuteronomy 31:6b ESV
…….for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. HE will not leave you or forsake you.”

“Jackie” – The Movie

25/02/2017

I used to be a movie lover that was always being laughed at for couldn’t differentiate fantasies from realities. In the 80’s, I had lived in Los Angeles, for more than 6-year, actually, for my advanced education, and I was also deeply immersed in the US sub-culture of Hollywood, apart from my hectic schedule on campus.

Honestly, now, I am not about to say that I am not a movie goer anymore. But my priority has changed since I have become a Christian. I would still put movies as my hobbies if I were asked. I always make a point to watch movies on big screens, especially for those were nominated for the Oscar.

I like to watch the Red Carpet event, on Oscar night, for high fashions. Mostly, I want to see, how many major award winners those who are in line with predictions. In the meantime, I have a friend who is a Catholic, lives in Canada would send me do/don’t movie checklist for Christians. So it would be no fun to be a guilt-ridden movie-goer.

It is really disheartening to see the excessive of sexual scenes, violence and with so much vain use of Lord’s name. My friend, Polly shared my view and told me that she knew people are explicitly praying for Hollywood. As a result, I have been intently looking for traces of Jesus in whatever I watch. It brings warmth to my heart to hear entertainers openly acknowledge Jesus.

Take the movie ‘Jackie,’ for example, is not a documentary film on the former US first lady. Many people would probably want to see if the movie might tip-off whom, actually behind the Assassination. But the film hasn’t revealed more secrets than the world has already known.

All the critics of the film would be just Google away. And I have to say that I was mesmerised by Natalie Portman’s incredible performance; as Jackie, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Portman won her another Oscar after she received her award in the film of ‘Black Swan,’ 2010.

Personally to me, ‘Jackie’ is a God-glorifying film. And I have to say commending the production team would actually give in, and allow Jackie’s (Portman) “spiritually illuminating” dialogue with an old priest to be included in the movie. Without knowing how factual of Jackie’s spirituality, in life, but that’s a bold move in Hollywood production.

If God is love, why doesn’t HE stop all the horrors that we visit each other?” or “Was God in the bullets that killed Jack?” These questions are the classic, default way of thinking that bedevil both of the people with deep religious faith and pre-seekers.

I was moved by the answer that was given by an old priest (John Hurt, who died in Jan. 2017) to Jackie (Portman), in the film. He reassures her that “even in moments of unimaginable tragedy, God is still there…” And even more helpful. ’The  priest then challenges Jackie (Portman) to see that” the works of God have been revealed in her.”

I was serious as challenged in the cinema by the dialogues from a film as well listening to any truth that was brought out from the pulpit. Personally, the most thoughtful touch was the ending of the film that Jackie shared of her infatuation, over the enchanting music of the Camelot, to counter balance her grief of the tragic Assassination of her husband.

If the dialogues in the movie actually occurred in Jackie’s life, then I would think that was how my Daddy God prepared Jackie to face another tragic blow when her only son died on the plane he was piloting crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near the Coast of Martha’s Vineyard, in 1999.

If not, it certainly brought the sense of victory and peace to those who have been praying for Hollywood. Unlike Mel Gilson’ s, ‘The Passion of Christ,’ the production team used the platform, which Jackie held, as the former US first lady, to be instrumental for HIS glory. Do you know there is another God-glorifying, Mel Gilson film, will be in the cinema soon?

Romans 8:39

“No power in the sky above or in the earth below–indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

p.s.

In the end, it was not Portman, but Emma Stone, of ‘LA LA Land’ took the Best Actress of the Oscar for 2017, and it gave me a good reason to go to the cinema for the film. And Emma Stone is perfect for her role. I love the movie, as what the critics were saying that “It brought tears to your eyes and a new song in your heart.”I thought that it was a movie for women, but it was on my brother-in-law’s high recommended list.

I would find time soon, to talk about another Movie, ” Churchill ”

Love Disorder – ‘Jesus Met A Woman At the Well’

27/05/2017

 2 Corinthians 4:18 NIV

‘So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.’

I was intrigued to find out that ‘Jesus Met A Woman At the Well’ is the title of an old gospel song, (1) which relates the story of Jesus met with a Samaritan woman, which occurred in the Gospel of John at 4:4-26. And how this story has mirrored ‘Addicted To Love.?

If we would write a play on this most famous Bible story and the cast of the leading roles are Jesus and the Samaritan woman. And the setting is the Jacob’s well; the scene is that Jesus alone with the woman having dialogue, while HIS disciple went to town to get food.

The long and deep-rooted dislike between the Samaritans and the Jews was the scene that’s ‘unseen.’ The screen started rolling as Jesus, being the son of man, traveled from Judea to Galilee, interlaced with what says in John 4:4 NIV that now HE had to go through Samaria.’ Therefore, Jesus made a detour and went to the ‘well’ and asked for water.

The nameless Samaritan woman also went to the well. She was not only an ethnicity out cast in the eyes of the Jews, but also was a social out cast to her own people. What’s ‘unseen’ is that she was divorced 5-time; had a bumpy love life and was with her 6th man at the time.

No matter it was by chances, or by choices, or due to all of her former husbands dealt treacherously against her, she indeed was divorced 5-time. And after gone through 5-marriage, she still had faith to be with her 6th man, then her addictive personality to love was evident.

It says in Malachi 2:16a, ‘“I hate divorce!” says the LORD, the God of Israel.”’(1) Also having God’s curse for women, in mind that says in the book of Genesis @3:16b, it has always been a trying deed and feeling shameful a cruelty especially for the divorced women.

Gen 3:16 b

“ In pain, you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband and he shall rule over you,”- New American Standard 1977

Why Jesus wanted to be alone, at the well to meet with this scandalous divorcee? The scripture tells us that Jesus did what the One who sent HIM to do (2) that’s to do what God wills him to do.  But as the son of man, didn’t HE have concern for HIS reputation or temptation? Was that drawing water what is all about?

As the dialogue between them had evolved, evidently, it’s all about the water. And it’s to compare and contrast between the natural water that quenches the physical human thirst, and the Living Water that is for the thirsting soul.

Being all-knowing, Jesus knew all about this nameless woman but didn’t reproof her current state of life. Jesus didn’t hold a double standard, as the Son of God to the woman. HE has always been a God of compassion, HE knew that the woman needed a savior.

Exodus 34:5b-6 NIV

……”And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness,”

Being all-powerful, as the giver of the Living Water, Jesus reached out to her and taught her the Divine things on high. HE further emphasizes that the Living Water is the Spirit, which would spring from within, and would no more feel thirsty again. The woman immediately said that “give it to me.”

Immediately, with a new spirit, she becomes an Evangelist to spared the good news to her people. No past sins could hinder her of acceptance of the Lord of God, Jesus. Today, the old Jacob’s well is still in the city of Nablus, in the West Bank, hypothetically the play would be a low-cost production, but it actually cost our dear Lord of God everything to send His one and only Son to come down to die for us.

And don’t we all, as women need that drop of living water to live a curse-free life? With no condemnations, and then scripture comes to me as below:

Isaiah 12:3 NIV

With Joy, you will draw water from the wells of salvation

Addicted to Love – ‘The Same Wound Up’

15/07/2017

In the midst of expounding on the late Amy Winehouse, I found what Paul Lester wrote in his contribution to theGuardian with the title of “Whitney and Amy: worlds-apart artists who wound up in the same place.’ (1)

I was a puzzled why Paul used the phrase of ‘wound up’ as the title of his article, but I have appreciated how Paul Lester insightfully compare and contrast Amy and Whitney in line of their personalities, up brings and their talents in music.

Unlike Whitney, Amy didn’t have the ‘mainstream showbiz linkage,’ but Amy wrote her own songs and lyrics to tell her stories. So Amy’s popularity was a true validation of her as the gifted Singer/Song writer.

Whereas Whitney was a Christian, with deep trace of gospel in her voice. As for Amy who had a Jewish up bring. With their ‘world-apart differences, they were both sadly wound up ‘stumbling wrecks dependent on ‘bad boys and drugs.

 15-02-2012 edit

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2

 ‘To everything there is a season; A time for every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; A time to plants, and a time to pluck what is planted;

I have never been a real fan of either artist. It was few months earlier that Amy died. And now Whitney was found dead, drowning in the hotel room. Immediately, Whitney’s candid dialogue with Oprah Winfrey(2 )in the exclusive interview (2009) came to my recollection.

My heart went to her for her emotional afflictions that she had to go through, as a public figure. I was puzzled, at first, as she helplessly devoted to her husband. And it made a lot of sense when she said that she was addicted to her love for him, and he was like drug to her.

But her testimony of ‘‘come through moment’ at the interview was up lifting and edifying. She openly professed that it was the Spirit of God that had sustained her through out, and she had humbly claimed nothing on her own efforts and strength for it.

I was then, facilitating a Monday night women’s Bible study at the church. So I shared what I heard from the interview with ladies in the class, and invited them to pray for her, only whenever they felt led to pray, and we were all in agreement that Whitney Houston needed prayer supports.

Then she died, and few days later, I watched the Anderson Cooper Live, on CNN, with few Medical Doctors on the panel; the discussion was centered on the terms of ‘Drug Death’ or ‘Pill death’ that quoted by the MDs to reveal the horrific drug abuse situation in Hollywood.

It revealed that most of the entertainers would rely on prescription drugs to ease up their pressure in their line of works or to handle their instant success that led to. It all started off with addiction, then it led to death on drug over doses.

The panel cited all the drug-related deaths such as Michael Jackson (June, 2009), Amy Winehouse (July 2011), Whitney Houston (February 2012) and definitely Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe were also mentioned.

As my daily scriptures reading from Philippians 4:10-20, I learned that even Apostle Paul had to learn to be contented by asking his dear Lord to give him the ‘spiritual muscle to endure lean times and to avoid the pitfalls of abundance’ – OurDailyBread 15/02/2012

As the media would keen to focus on what Whitney died of? I wished to know, definitely on why she died pre-maturely? She was gifted with a unique voice in singing, she was good to look at from all angles, and she always professed her love for Jesus.

Is it because her spiritual muscle was not strong enough to save her at the end? It brought warmth to my heart to know that a private funeral service was schedule to hold in her home church where she used to sing for God, there, when she was only 11.

I am sure that it would be a God glorifying funeral service, and a good sent off for Whitney. I was led to pray with the following scripture, as God would minister to her family, especially her daughter and her fans, all over the world.

Evidently, in Whitney’s case, for whatever our dear Lord of God, Jesus, gave and HE was taken it back. We shall rejoice that Whitney has finally found her rest and her true Love that’s in the bosom of her Daddy God, and Whitney could sing her heart all out to Jesus that ‘I Would Always Love You!(3)

Romans 8:38-39

(38) For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, (39) nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

 p.s.

Bobbie Kristina Brown, Whitney Houston’s daughter tragically died at 22, on July 26, 2015, was she also wound up in the same place like what her mother was at?
