Birthday

” To everything there’s a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven – a time to be born…”

It comes as a total surprise via social media notification that I have had quite a few of my friends’ birthdays fall in May. It includes my senior pastor and my former BSF teaching leader.

Every birthday is the day God has made; all should rejoice in it. Therefore, the birthday celebration is always a joyous occasion. However, some Christians avoid birthday celebrations because they view the custom as leading to self-indulgence or self-glorification or having a pagan origin.

My late mother died long before her time. Once, she told me that I should keep my birthday private and that the celebrations should be among family. And I have kept this family tradition all these years without being a birthday party giver or a selective birthday party goer.

Once, my uncle told me that every birthday is the day every mother has to go through extraordinary physical, emotional, and spiritual hardship. And every year, I make time to remember my mother on my birthday, and I miss her dearly.

After being a Christian, I know that birth is a God-given beginning. And life is God’s gift to man, and how we live our lives on earth is our gift to God.

I would like to have a silent prayer to wish all my birthday friends ‘much more blessings on their birthdays, in God’s abundant love.
